Tobacco shredding can be accomplished in many ways. There is a couple of machines so the market that does the shredding with ease and work really well. One machine is rather expensive and the other is not available right now, but will probably be available again. You actually can use a paper shredder for shredding tobacco. Also, a Pasta Maker works fairly well too.
Just remember that with these machines it is trial and error. The tobacco has to be dry but has to have some moisture remaining in the leaves or it will just turn to dust and thats not good.
Here’s a link to my website that shows one tobacco shredder available: You can also use a food processor, a coffee grinder, or spice grinder. Again, trial and error with these so that the tobacco does not turn into a powder. With tobacco leaves you also have the issue of the machines gumming up. You will have to keep an eye out for this and clean the machines on a regular basis for them to keep working at their best. Hope this helps. MY WHOLE LEAF TOBACCO SHREDDER: I shred all my tobacco using this shredder since at this point in time I buy only natural leaf tobacco. I'm naming my machine the 'MINI WINICKER' since for all intents and purposes that's what it mimics. The 'WINICKER guillotine cutter': At 4min into the video it shows the cutting mechanism. To give credit where credit is due, I originally got this idea after viewing the video 'Docwicht is cutting Tobacco': Had it not been for the 'Docwicht' video my machine would not exist today and while I believe my machine is very much improved, it's sill basically the same idea. And now THE MINI WINICKER 01 Body: 02 Body: 03 Top: 04 Push block: 05 Rod: 06 epoxy: 07 Handle: 08 Feet: 09 Clamp cap.
10 Clamps: 11 Cleaver: UPDATE #1 I have found that after repeated shredding the end of the machine does show slight wear. Kind of a minor problem really but a problem none the less so, I added a 22 gauge steel cap to the end of the machine. This is not to hard to do. First do the face (just the part you can see in the picture above) leave the inside u-shape slightly larger than you need.
Then mark your screw holes, Drill 1 about half way, insert screw, Realign plate, drill opposite hole about half way, insert screw, then the rest of the holes (again only about half way). Remove screws and metal plate and countersink screw holes in wood. Drill holes to screw length with a smaller drill bit so the screw threads can get a good bite.

Put Metal plate back into position on the mini winicker and lightly screw in a couple of screws to keep the metal plate in position leaving some of the screw holes empty. With a metal object (be creative, a very hard piece of wood could work as well) tap the metal around the open holes until they are recessed into the counter sunk wood enough to clear a knife sliding along the surface of the metal plate. Put screws in finished holes and repeat the process for the rest of the screw holes. Next tap the metal plate near the outside edges of the wood folding the metal flat against the sides, top and bottom of the mini winicker. DO NOT touch the inside u-shape part yet! Now secure the sides, top and bottom with screws.
You can countersink the sides, top and bottom if you wish however it isn't necessary since only the face of the metal plate comes in contact with the knife. NOW for the inside u-shape part. With a metal file, file the inside of the metal plate a little past the surface of the wood (see picture above). This allows the compressed tobacco to decompress slightly without catching on to the metal plate and separating it from the wood. OK, I know that sounded complicated but it really is easier than it sounds. I used 22 gauge steel sheet metal which is available at most hardware stores. Stainless steel should be fine as well.
I did not consider using galvanized metal as I have heard it could pose a health risk if burnt and inhaled. UPDATE #2 Below is a picture of the new threaded rod and handle I made for my shredder. The old rod was 1/2in thick and after shredding about 15-20lbs of leaves the threads stripped. I thought that if I replaced the nut that the rod turns in with a larger nut with more threads that would solve the problem.
So I replaced the nut with one that was for joining 2 rods together. Since it was 2in long with far more threads it seemed like a good solution to the problem. Well my new solution didn't make it past 1lb of leaves. Maybe the rod or nut was softer steel? I don't know. My latest solution (Pictured) is working well so far. The new rod is 5/8in thick instead of 1/2in this doesn't sound like much of a difference but in actuality it is.
The threads and the nut are much bigger. The extra 1/8in in thickness works out to almost 1/2in in added circumference.
With the thicker more heavy duty threads this should last. My old handle a 9in long, 1in thick hick hickory dowel was to thin for the new rod. I turned a new oak handle on my lathe. The center is 1 and 1/2in thick and the rest is a little over 1in thick. The handle was secured to the rod with the straight part of 2 nails inserted through the handle and rod protruding about 1/8in on either side then taped with a hammer until flush with the wood. But if you don't have access to a lathe you can always buy a 1 and 1/4in oak dowel from home depot.
The new thicker rod no longer needs the added collar just grind the tip as before and through on 4 or 5 washers to act as a sort of bearing and your good to go. RESULTS Here's a few pictures of some newly shredded tobacco. I always check the tobacco shredding threads. I like all the new methods and materials. My homade shredder cuts what I need for a week in 10=15 minutes. Not much prep besides destemming and proper case. I like the reviews on the powermatic.
As a woodworker I know all about clamping. Unless i decide to start glueing my tobacco I'll have to pass.Yea, I tried the glue and clamp method and I had less than positive results.
Now I just use the clamps! But seriously, one advantage to this kind of shredder is there is no need to press the tobacco into a brick before adding the tobacco to the shredder. You also don't need to add the moisture necessary for a brick to form and hold it's shape since the clamps will keep the tobacco in its current form, this results in far less tobacco sticking together. All you need is enough moisture to keep the tobacco from crumbling. You can then add about 1/2lb of tobacco and shred it to the consistency in the picture in about 15min. As far as the durability of this shredder goes, other than the occasional need to replace the threaded rod and the nuts I think this tool will someday be an antique since there is absolutely no reason for it to ever break although a harder threaded rod and softer nut would most likely be a good idea to keep any scheduled maintenance to a minimum. Anyway the reason I posted this thing is so anyone that wants to make one or something similar will have my plans or at least a starting point or some ideas for something similar.
It has worked very well over the last 6yrs for me. Did you have pics on the prep and loading? No, but really all that's involved is jamming as much leaves as possible into it while doing the best you can to keep them in front of and off the top of the push block, then turning the handle until the end cap starts to get separated from the body.
I usually throw the first cut and the last little bit back into the bag to be shredded. That's really about all there is to it. You can remove the mid rib or not that's up to your preference. I personally think it's fine to leave it in as long as your doing a fine shag cut however for anything thicker I would take it out. You can also clamp the top down for 5min then loosen it and add more tobacco if you want but that's up to the individual and not necessary.
As far as the knife goes, keep it very sharp and using a slight sliding action along with a chopping motion is best. But it's really very simple just jam it full of tobacco clamp it down turn the handle until the end cap starts to separate, remove it and start slicing, turning the handle just enough to give you your desired cut.

I'm also very interested in the powermatic shredder and the Fresh Choice Mach 1 shredder as well. I'll probably be buying one of the two soon, I just haven't decided which one yet.
From what I've seen so far they both appear to be great tools with different strong points. I think you'll find cutting a blend to be a real advantage, trying to blend a fine cut is a challenge. I'm toying around with a link belt, kind of like scaled down chain link fence. Kies Tutorial. I ran into the problem of trying to push tobacco, it's like pushing on a rope. It likes to stick, so why fight it.

Taking the pressure off of it between cuts (the top plate) helps a bunch. For a time i used a lever to put pressure on the top plate rather than a clamp. It was easier to relieve the pressure when I moved the tobacco for the next cut. I'll take some pictures of it and post them.
